Karachi: When the hands that perform life-saving surgeries take up a paintbrush, they reveal not just skill—but soul. A unique three-day art exhibition organized by the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) showcased the vibrant and often unseen creative sides of doctors.
The exhibition featured an impressive array of artwork created by surgeons, ranging from scenic landscapes and vivid portraits of birds and animals to bonsai trees and innovative pieces made from recycled materials. Each piece told a story — some capturing the serenity of nature, others breathing new life into discarded objects.
The initiative aimed to highlight that creativity isn’t limited to professional artists. Even those in the high-stress, precision-driven world of surgery can find expression and relief through art. “Whether it’s surgery or painting—anything done with the heart is an art form,” one of the organizers reflected.
More than just a display, the exhibition served as a gentle reminder that doctors heal more than just the body—they often touch the soul. Attendees, including hospital staff, students, and visitors, were moved by the depth and emotion reflected in the artwork.
The kaleidoscope of colors on canvas illustrated that art and medicine are not worlds apart—both seek to restore, to express, and to connect. These doctor-artists showed that healing doesn’t always come from a prescription pad—it can come from a palette too.
